Classes

In the Hakkoryu Fudōshin Dojo we take a holistic approach to training, viewing Hakkoryu practice as an integral part of a larger whole encompassing self-defense, body awareness and integration, natural movement, and health. This kind of study is often called “budo” (martial way) in the Eastern traditions.

The training in the dojo consists of paired “kata” (‘drilling technique’ in a modern context) supplemented with applications work and developing practical self-protection skills. While much time is spent practicing the formal techniques of the kata, the emphasis is on internalizing and understanding the essence and movement patterns contained in the forms, rather than memorizing a set of specific movements and responses.

Our class sizes are small and the training format is more akin to private lessons and/or small study groups where we customize the instruction for the needs of those in attendance. In addition to jujutsu training and applications, we practice Koho Shiatsu (Japanese acupressure) and spend a significant amount of time studying and developing the body using various drills and exercises.

Classes are adult only (18 and up) and are offered weekly at the following times:

Sunday
Hakkoryu Jujutsu / Koho Shiatsu
10:00am – 11:30am
Tuesday
Hakkoryu Jujutsu / Koho Shiatsu
11:30pm – 12:30pm
Friday
Hakkoryu Jujutsu / Koho Shiatsu
11:30am – 12:30pm

The class schedule is periodically adjusted based on current student needs and availability. We also have regular opportunities for longer and more intensive training on weekends. We bring guest Shihan to town and organize group trips to visit other Hakkoryu dojo several times a year.

The monthly fee is $85 paid via credit card on a month to month membership. There is also a $100 initial registration fee with the Hakkoryu Hombu Dojo in Japan. Subsequent years are approximately $80 annually. Cole sensei and Walker sensei can be available outside of regular class times for private training at the rate of $60/hour on a case by case basis.

If you are interested in learning more and coming by to check out a class, please send us a message. You are welcome to train with us free for a week with no obligation to see if we’re a good fit for what you’re looking for.
